The Earthquake...

An earthquake at Africa’s Lake Kivu took place on February 3 2008. The earthquake took place as a result of diverging plates and the magnitude of the earthquake was 6.0 and 5.0 at Bukavu and Rwanda respectively.

This earthquake affected several countries in Africa such as Bukavu (a town in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo), Rwanda, Burundi and Kenya. It struck Bukavu, the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo at 0735 according to the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Then it struck Rwanda three and a half hours later which was 1105, also according to the GMT. The earthquake was felt in Burundi and Kenya’s capital, Nairobi. There were no casualties, but only an electricity cut.

The earthquake caused at least 39 people to be killed and more than 300 injured. Rwanda’s officials said that 34 people had been killed in the country’s west including 10 that were killed when a church collapsed. The officials also said that at least 200 injured. On the other hand, the mayor of Bukavu said that 5 people were dead and 149 were injured. This earthquake also left more than 280 people homeless.

The government of Bukavu and Rwanda aided in rebuilding houses. They also started rescue operations that were continuous and there were police and soldiers pulling people out of the rubble.

I think the government of Bukavu and Rwanda should adopt slightly more technology to build proper and better quality houses and buildings in Bukavu and Rwanda for their people to live and work in. I think this may decrease the impact of the earthquake.
